5 Eligible expenses you can purchase with your HSA or FSA

The list of eligible expenses that you can purchase with your FSA or HSA may be larger than you think, and it continues to grow. Here are five expenses that you can use your Surency Flex Benefits Card to pay for:

Feminine Hygiene Products

When the CARES Act was put in place it reversed previous laws in place by the Affordable Care Act that limited eligible expenses to over the counter items that were prescribed from a physician. Certain menstrual care products such as menstrual cups, pads, tampons and menstrual pain relief medications are now considered eligible items and can be purchased using your benefits debit card. Mental Healthcare

Substance abuse treatment, psychiatric treatment and products/programs to quit smoking are all eligible expenses under your HSA or FSA. If you receive psychological care for mental care (not just general improvement of stress/relief) you can also use your Surency Flex Benefits Card to pay for this expense. Additionally, if you have to travel to obtain mental health services, you can use your HSA benefits to pay for meals and lodging.

Alternative Therapies

Chiropractic treatments as well as acupuncture are both eligible expenses that you can use your HSA or FSA funds to pay for. Massage therapy is considered an eligible expense when prescribed by a physician. Your doctor will need to provide you with a letter of medical necessity.

Pregnancy Tests and Fertility Tests/Treatments

You can use your Surency Flex Benefits Card to pay for the following childbirth-related expenses:

  • Ovulation or fertility monitoring
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Maternity support belts
  • Birth control
  • Vasectomies
  • Breast pumps

Sunscreen and Acne Skincare Products

No matter the season, it is always important to protect your skin from the damaging sun rays. All sunscreen products are considered eligible expenses including eye cream with SPF and tinted sunscreen lotion. If you suffer from acne, you can use your HSA or FSA funds to purchase acne cleansers, at-home light therapy kits, gel and creams. You can also use your funds to pay for visits to the dermatologist.
