Leukoplakia
Causes: Leukoplakia is caused by excess cell growth in the mouth. The white patches that form are common among tobacco users, people who have dentures that do not fit correctly, and those who habitually chew their cheeks.
Symptoms: A whitish-colored patch formation on the inner part of the cheeks, gums or tongue appears with leukoplakia.
Diagnosis and Treatment: Once identified by the dentist, a biopsy may be ordered to ensure the patch is not cancerous. Biopsy results will determine the course of action but it starts with the removal of risk factors: tobacco, ill-fitting bridges or partials and cheek chewing.
