Candidiasis
Causes: Candidiasis occurs when large amounts of yeast are produced within the mouth. It may prosper after an antibiotic treatment due to the decrease of normal bacteria in the mouth.
Symptoms: White patches on tongue and inside of cheeks that wipe away and leave a red, raw, painful area on the soft tissue. Other symptoms include:
- Pain while eating
- Difficulty swallowing
Diagnosis and Treatment: There is no direct treatment for candidiasis but dentists suggest good oral hygiene and denture removal while sleeping. Prescription medications and saliva substitutes may help as well.
